HTC Pilot Project Rotterdam

Subsided by Kaen vor West II, the two pilot units for HTC treatment and wet oxidation were brought to the REYM site in Rotterdam. From April through June, six different sludge streams were treated in the HTC process. The outgoing product streams—biocoal and filtrate—were sent for external lab analysis and to potential off-takers.

The on-site pilot trials were successful and generated significant interest. On June 8, iTanks and EIT InnoEnergy, together with REYM, hosted an Open House event at the REYM Rotterdam premises. The event attracted great attention, with many visitors from local industries and businesses, as well as stakeholders from both the private and public sectors. The event confirmed the value of showcasing the process live, on site, and demonstrating the transformation of sludge into biocoal.

Following the technical and commercial analysis of the outgoing streams, a business case is now being developed for a full-scale HTC plant at the REYM Rotterdam site, including an evaluation of the technical and commercial feasibility of the installation.
