A new way to handle industrial sludge, sewage sludge and digestate .

One OxyPower HTC™ plant can process up to 30,000 tons of wet sludge per year—the amount produced by a city of 300,000 - 400,000 people.

OxyPower HTC™ is the sludge handling solution you can count on

As regulatory requirements are tightened and the cost of sludge handling increases, OxyPower HTC™ offers an environmentally sound, safe, and practical solution.

Regulatory compliance

In efforts to achieve sustainability, spreading sludge on agricultural land and landfilling of sludge are being targeted by tighter environmental regulations all over the world.

Circular sludge handling

Sludge contains useful resources. One of the key benefits of OxyPower HTC™ is the ability to capture the energy, nitrogen and phosphorus in the sludge.

Big cost savings

Current sludge disposal methods are becoming more expensive with the cost of transportation, chemicals, and fees steadily increasing. OxyPower HTC™ can significantly reduce these costs.

Achieve sustainability

Common sludge disposal methods such as landfilling or use as fertilizer on agricultural land are being subjected to increasingly tighter environmental regulations—and have even been banned in some places, causing sludge handling costs to increase. Sludge producers such as biogas plants, pulp and paper industries and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) need new, more sustainable solutions for dealing with sludge.

OxyPower HTC™ align with sustainability-driven environmental demands:

No landfills

With OxyPower HTC™ landfilling can be avoided entirely. The sludge is converted into HTC biocoal.

Harvest nutrients

Nitrogen can be efficiently extracted from the process water. When the HTC biocoal is incinerated, phosphorus can be recovered from the ash.

Stop GHG emissions

The conversion of sludge into HTC biocoal puts an effective stop to the decomposition of sludge—a significant source of greenhouse gases (GHG), including methane and nitrous oxide.

Increase biofuel production

OxyPower HTC™ uses the energy in the sludge to run the process, so no added heat is necessary. The wet oxidation stage results in substances that increase biogas production by 5-10%, and the HTC biocoal from the process can be used as biofuel.

Pathogen-free

The OxyPower HTC™ process thermally sterilizes the sludge, killing pathogens, including multi-resistant bacteria, resulting in a safer environment.

Stop pollution

Spreading sludge can pollute the environment with heavy metals, hazardous chemicals, and pharmaceutical residues, and the increased nutrient load can cause eutrophication. OxyPower HTC™ stops pollution by allowing nutrient recovery and concentrating hazardous substances in the HTC biocoal.

Be a better neighbor

Municipal WWTPs aren’t always neighbors of first choice—sludge stinks and is classified as waste. OxyPower HTC™ thermally sterilizes sludge in a closed process, converting it into odorless HTC biocoal, which is much more pleasant, safer, and easier to handle. Not only that, heavy traffic to and from the WWTP is reduced by up to 80%.

The missing link to a
circular sludge economy

Most sludges are classified as waste, but at the same time it contains useful recyclable resources: nitrogen, phosphorus, and bioenergy. Upstream educational programs by WWTPs and stricter chemical regulations have improved sludge quality but that hasn’t sufficed to create a circular sludge economy. What’s been missing up until now has been an an innovative, sustainable sludge treatment technology. Now it’s here: OxyPower HTC™.

Harvesting sludge resources

OxyPower HTC™ makes it possible to convert sludge into HTC biocoal, a viable biofuel for heat and power generation. The OxyPower HTC™ plant not only runs on the chemical energy in the sludge, it is also a net energy producer.

OxyPower HTC™ is ideal for sewage sludge handling

OxyPower HTC™ is a new, innovative technology for biogas plants, pulp and paper industries and wastewater treatment plants that improves operations and reduces environmental impact.

Fewer trucks on the road

Transporting wet sludge is essentially transporting water. By converting sludge into HTC biocoal on-site, transportation costs can be reduced by up to 80%, while at the same time reducing environmental impact. Easy to handle and easy to store, HTC biocoal has only 20% of the volume of wet sludge.

HTC biocoal—climate-smart and odorless

OxyPower HTC™ converts sludge into HTC biocoal, putting a stop to GHG emissions from sludge decomposition.

Nutrient harvesting

OxyPower HTC™ simplifies phosphorus and nitrogen recovery. Nitrogen is recovered during the process itself. After incineration of the HTC biocoal, phosphorus can be extracted from the ash using available technology.

Happy neighbors

HTC biocoal is thermally sterilized, killing pathogens and rendering it odorless. Which is a relief for the neighbors.

High capacity

The capacity of one standard-sized OxyPower HTC™ plant is about 30,000 tons of wet sludge per year. If a higher capacity is needed, the modular design makes it easy to add more units.

Low operating cost

An OxyPower HTC™ plant has low energy requirements and operating costs. About 100 kWh electricity per ton of sludge is needed.

Self-generating heat

In order to dry wet organic matter a lot of heat energy is required. The OxyPower HTC™ plant generates all the heat needed through wet oxidation, which means no added heat is needed.

Safer work environment

Many sludges are classified as waste and precautions need to be taken along the entire process chain. HTC biocoal is much safer and easier to handle than sludge.
